DASD School Board gives first approval to the general fund budget for next year. An article by Glenn Schuckers.

By a vote of five to one, the DuBois Area School Board voted to approve the proposed final general fund budget for the school year 2023-2024. The 5-1 vote was a result of three members of the board being absent from the meeting. Board member Charlie Watt was the one member voting against the approval.

The three members who were absent from the meeting were president Larry Salone, vice-president Gilbert Barker, and member Dave Cuneo. With both the president and vice-president of the board being absent, member Sam Armagost was elected to serve as president pro-tempe for the meeting.

The board will meet in June to take the final vote to approve the budget as required by Pennsylvania law.

Later in the meeting, the board voted to hire three instructors, two for the elementary schools and one for the Middle School. Both Krista Burkett and Kassandra Loudon were hired as elementary instructors. Burkett has five years of teaching experience and Loudon has three years of experience. Michael Berton was hired as a Middle School instructor. He has fifteen years experience. The board also voted  to hire Audrey Null as Supervisor of Special Education effective July 1, 2023.

Following on from the discussion from the work session a week earlier, the board voted to once again start using the term “valedictorian” to designate the graduating senior with the highest grade standing in the class. That term had been discontinued a number of years ago after being used for many years.

The next board meeting will be June 8.
